Colin Buss Hazard abatement in parks. Gerald Whalley When the Memekay Flats campsite opens in the spring; shelter now under construction with concrete pad.

8 Clay Carlson Is there a recreation inventory/use study done? Ron Frank WFP commissioned a recreation study for the DFA Colin Buss It is key features that licensee s need to manage for (Charlie Cornfield identifies which key feature licensee s must manage for). RATIFIED Meeting Date November 15, 2012 Revised Date: December 18, 2012 MIFLAG Page 5 of 8 Ron Frank My summary of the DFA Recreation Report is that the Snowden, Brewster and other Sayward Forest areas provide so much more accessible and an array of recreation opportunities that the DFA is no as significant. It does identify key features to manage for. Rick Wangler Regarding the saw milling education session: dust in the saw mills is a current issue. ACTION ITEM: Cindy Fife to combine this Parking Lot with our Action item list and sort by the three categories: Field trips, Discussion Topics (Speakers) and Action Items.

9 E. Recreation indicator Gerald Whalley Economic development is important to Area A and Kelsey Bay. We have a 41 km horse trail permitted under Section 56 of the Act but that doesn t afford the type of protection to ensure the integrity of the trail (Gerald read from requirements). Width of trail Permanent access roads cross the trail and that is part of life, but we have a section where the actual logging road runs down the middle of the trail. The way it is now, there is no way to get a horse down the trail unless you go on the logging road, and you can t get off the road. It s a hazard. There may be plans to put further logging roads on the trail, so there won t be any trail. In other situations, WFP has done a good job of looking after our trail and cleaning up after road building/logging.

10 Another section, the logging road is above your head and if a logging truck comes by (Big Tree 500), a panicked horse could jump off the cliff. What we need in this indicator is some things like consultation in advance , advising WFP engineers of horse hazards. I think there is a way to help this thing work for everyone. John Andres I found this interesting. I heard you say you were looking for better consultation. Gerald Whalley That s right. I m not saying stay away from our trail. But if logging roads are developed on top of the trail, then there will be no trail. The trail is established (20m corridor). This is the only permitted equine trial on Vancouver Island . It has substantial campsites on both ends of the trail. Lynn Nash there needs to be some opportunity for relocation of the trail.
