Randolph County School System High School Program of Study Planning Guide 2015 - 2016 Dear Student: Welcome to that exciting time of the year when you choose the courses you will take during the upcoming school year.

2 The Randolph County School System s high school Program provides students many options based on their career goals, needs and individual interests. Students may choose from a wide array of courses and programs . Choices students make in high school affect the options they have for future education and job opportunities after high school. Students may select courses from arts education, career and technical education, computer education, English language arts, English as a Second Language, healthful living, mathematics, media, JROTC, science, second languages and social Studies .

3 There are also additional course opportunities available via North Carolina Virtual Public School online courses and through a partnership with the Community College System. Membership and participation in numerous clubs, organizations, and teams are also available. This planning guide is provided to assist students and their parents or guardians in the planning and registration process. It is the responsibility of all students and their parents or guardians to make sure students are registered for the courses they need in order to meet graduation and college/university admission requirements.

All high schools are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI), the regional accreditation agency. The system-wide accreditation means that our high schools have met and/or surpassed a strict set of national standards for educational excellence. PLANNING YOUR HIGH SCHOOL COURSE OF STUDY During the next few years you will be responsible for making many significant decisions about your future.

8 Among these will be decisions on a course of study that will be both interesting and beneficial to you now and in the future. The information contained in the Program of Studies Handbook is designed to help you. We hope that you consider carefully the variety and content of course offerings and select those that will coincide with (1) your future plans, (2) your interests, and (3) your abilities. In planning your individual Program you will want to study thoroughly the basic requirements for graduation. Beyond the graduation requirements you should give careful consideration to your choice of electives and interest courses, which will better prepare you for your future endeavors.

9 For 9th Graders Entering in 2009-10 and Later The Randolph County School System will offer the Future Ready Core Course of Study for all students. Future Ready Core course of study is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation so that they will have as many options as possible when they graduate from high school. This insures that it is never too late for a student to decide what they want to do when they graduate and prepares them for 21st century opportunities. Technical institutes, community colleges, and four-year colleges have varying requirements; therefore, you are encouraged to investigate the specific requirements of the institutions of your choice and choose your high school course of study accordingly.

We all encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity to determine what you need to achieve your immediate and lifetime goals. Parents are encouraged to help students in planning their course selections throughout their high school careers. This process begins prior to students entering high school. Careful planning, as early as the 8th grade, will ensure that students have completed the necessary requirements needed for specialized programs .
