At the completion of this lesson, you [the student] will: Action: Locate an unknown point on a map by intersection Conditions: Given two known locations on a map, a standard 1:50,000 scale topographical map, a straightedge, a coordinate scale and protractor, and a pencil Standards: Determine the eight-digit grid coordinate of the unknown location within 10 meters of the actual grid Safety Requirements Conduct a safety brief prior to training as needed and IAW unit and installation policies. Risk Assessment Level Low - Risk Assessment to be produced locally IAW FM 5-19, August 2006.

5 Evaluation None Instructional Lead-In You are out on patrol and you observe enemy activity in a valley below you. This must be reported to your higher headquarters. How do you tell headquarters exactly where the enemy is located? This period of instruction will teach you exactly that. 4 SECTION III. PRESENTATION 1. Learning step / Activity 1. Locate an Unknown Point on a Map using Intersection Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 40 mins Media: Slide Presentation a. Intersection is the location of an unknown point by successively occupying at least two (preferably three) known positions on the ground and then map sighting on the unknown location.

6 It is used to locate distant or inaccessible points or objects such as enemy targets and danger areas. There are two methods of intersection: the map and compass method and the straightedge method. NOTE: SHOW Slide 3 (Definition) b. When using the map and compass method: (1) Orient the map using the compass. (2) Locate and mark your position on the map. (a) For instructional purposes we will use Hill 284 located in grid EG 1287. (b) Use the resection method if you do not know your exact location on the map. NOTE: SHOW Slide 4 (Plot Your Location) (3) Determine the magnetic azimuth to the unknown position using the compass. (4) Convert the magnetic azimuth to grid azimuth. For instructional purposes we will use a grid azimuth of 120 degrees.

7 (5) Draw a line on the map from your position on this grid azimuth. (Click on Slide 4 again) (6) Move to a second known point and repeat steps 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. (a) For instructional purposes we will use the Y in the road located in grid EG 1387. (b) For instructional purposes we will use a grid azimuth of 135 degrees. NOTE: SHOW Slide 5 (Plot Your Alternate Location) (7) The location of the unknown position is where the lines cross on the map. NOTE: SHOW Slide 6 (Plot Unknown Location) (8) Determine the grid coordinates. (EG 14628664) c. The straightedge method is used when a compass is not available. When using the straightedge method: (1) Orient the map on a flat surface by the terrain association method.

8 5 (2) Locate and mark your position on the map. (3) Lay a straightedge on the map with one end at the user s position (A) as a pivot point; then, rotate the straightedge until the unknown point is sighted along the edge. (4) Draw a line along the straightedge. NOTE: SHOW Slide 7 (Straightedge Method) (5) Repeat the above steps at a new position (B) and check for accuracy. (6) The location of the unknown position is where the lines cross on the map. (Click on Slide 7 again) NOTE: SHOW Slide 8 (Straightedge Method (con t)) (7) Determine the grid coordinates. This is a vital skill for calling in-direct fire on an enemy or for reporting the location of anything unusual you may spot while on patrol.
