Document Appearance New Jersey currently has an extension for REAL ID compliance, allowing Federal agencies to accept driver licenses and identification cards from New Jersey.

3 Currently Issued Documents The current Enhanced Digital Driver license began issuance May 2011. Security Characteristics: Features similar to previous license , but location of redundant data and 2D barcode shifted to right, the EIN/1 Dbarcode is now positioned vertically at the far left. The photo position of under 21 drives changed (see below). Back has gray MVC logo and black silhouette of the state. The new document is more secure and made with tamper-evident material. The background security has pre-print design and is continuous edge-to-edge. The cardholder name is formatted on two lines, the last name on the top and first name below. Step One starts with a Special Learner's Permit or Student Permit issued at age 16. Driver must be accompanied by adult at all times and can only drive from 5AM to 11PM. Next, at 17 and after 6 months of supervised driving and passage of a road test, a Provisional Photo license is issued for one year. Step Three is the basic license at 18. NJ law requires new drivers aged 21 years old and younger to display identifying decals on the front and rear licenses plates of their vehicles.

7 New Jersey residents 14 years of age and older, may apply for a non-driver photo identification. Residency Non-resident's home-state license honored on reciprocal basis; drivers must secure a New Jersey license within sixty days of establishing residency. A license cannot be transferred to a New Jersey license if the driver is under 18 years old. Instead, the driver must complete the Graduated Driver license (GDL) program requirements. Renewal Four years from initial or renewal issue date. Most drivers may skip the trip to an agency and renew by mail for the present renewal cycle. Some drivers must renew in person.
