The minimum capacity for WATER HEATERS shall be inaccordance with the first hour rating listed in Table , construction, and workmanship shall be in accor-dance with accepted engineering practices, manufacturer sinstallation instructions, and applicable standards and shallbe of such character as to secure the results sought to beobtained by this code. No WATER heater shall be hereinafterinstalled that does not comply with the type and model ofeach size thereof approved by the State Plumbing Board. Alist of accepted gas appliance standards are included in Direct-Vent WATER HEATERS .

2 WATER HEATERS that areconstructed and installed so that air for combustion is deriveddirectly from the outside atmosphere and all flue gases aredischarged to the outside atmosphere. [NFPA 54 ] Hot WATER Supply Boiler. A storage type potablewater heating unit exceeding any of the parameters of Sec-tion A Hot WATER Supply Boiler is under the jurisdic-tion of the Oregon Boiler and Pressure Vessel Specialty Storage type WATER HEATERS regulated by this code areappliances which heat potable WATER and are equipped withapproved safety devices and operate at or below the following:(1) Volume of 120 gallons (454 L);(2) WATER temperature of 210 F (99 C);(3) One hundred fifty pounds-force per square inch (psi)(1034 kPa) operating pressure.

3 And(4) Two hundred thousand British Thermal Units (BTU)( kW h) : Potable WATER HEATERS designed to create hot waterinstantaneously on demand without the use of a storage Indirect-Fired WATER Heater. A WATER heater con-sisting of a storage tank equipped with an internal or externalheat exchanger used to transfer heat from an external sourceto heat potable WATER . The storage tank either contains heatedpotable WATER or WATER supplied from an external source, suchas a WATER Heater. An appliance for supplying hot waterfor domestic or commercial purposes. [NFPA 54 ] Instantaneous-Tankless WATER Heater. Potablewater heating units, sometimes with a small buffer tank, designed to create hot WATER instantaneously on demand with-out the use of a storage tank, regardless of size or BTU input, and shall be listed per Table 14-1.

4 Permits. General. It shall be unlawful for any person to install, remove, or replace or cause to be installed, removed, orreplaced a WATER heater without first obtaining a permit fromthe building official to do Final WATER Heater Inspection. This inspectionshall be made after work authorized by the permit has beeninstalled. The building official will make such inspection asdeemed necessary to be assured that the work has been installedin accordance with the intent of this code. No appliance or partthereof shall be covered or concealed until the same has beeninspected and approved by the building WATER Heater Location. WATER heater installations in bedrooms andbathrooms shall be in accordance with one of the following[NFPA 54 ]:(1) Fuel-burning WATER HEATERS may be installed in a closetlocated in the bedroom or bathroom provided the closetis equipped with a listed, gasketed door assembly and alisted self-closing device.

Vent. WATER HEATERS of other than the direct-vent typeshall be located as close as practical to the chimney or gasvent.

7 [NFPA 54 ] Clearance. Listed WATER clearances shallnot be such as to interfere with combustion air, draft hoodclearance and relief, and accessibility for WATER HEATERS shall be installed in accordance withtheir listings and the manufacturer s instructions. [NFPA54 ] Unlisted WATER HEATERS . Unlisted waterheaters shall be installed with a clearance of 12 inches(305 mm) on all sides and rear. Combustible floors underunlisted WATER HEATERS shall be protected in an approvedmanner. [NFPA 54 ] Pressure-Limiting Devices. A WATER heater instal-lation shall be provided with overpressure protection bymeans of an approved, listed device installed in accordancewith the terms of its listing and the manufacturer's installa-tion instructions.

8 [NFPA 54 ] Temperature-Limiting Devices. A WATER heaterinstallation or a hot WATER storage vessel installation shall beprovided with over temperature protection by means of anapproved, listed device installed in accordance with the termsof its listing and the manufacturer's installation instructions.[NFPA 54 ] Temperature, Pressure, and Vacuum ReliefDevices. The installation of temperature, pressure, and vac-uum relief devices or combinations thereof, shall be installedin accordance with the terms of their listings and the manu-facturer s installation instructions. A shutoff valve shall not beplaced between the relief valve and the WATER heater or on dis-charge pipes between such valves and the atmosphere.

[NFPA 54 ] Oil-Burning and Other WATER HEATERS . Waterheaters deriving heat from fuels or types of energy other thangas shall be constructed and installed in accordance withapproved standards. Vents or chimneys for such appliancesshall be approved types. An adequate supply of air for com-bustion and for adequate ventilation of heater rooms or com-partments shall be provided. Each such appliance shall beinstalled in a location approved by the building official andlocal and state fire-prevention Safety Devices. Storage-type WATER HEATERS and hotwater boilers deriving heat from fuels or types of energy otherthan gas, shall be provided with, in addition to the primarytemperature controls, an over temperature safety protectiondevice constructed, listed, and installed in accordance withnationally recognized applicable standards for such devicesand a combination temperature and pressure-relief Indirect-Fired WATER HEATERS .

10 Indirect-fired waterheaters shall comply with the applicable sections of theASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, or to one of the otherapplicable standards shown in Table 14-1.
