Shear stresses due to torsion create diagonal tension stresses that produce diagonal cracking. If the member is not adequately reinforced for torsion, a sudden brittle failure can occur. Since shear and moment usually develop simultaneously with torsion, a reasonable design should logically account for the interaction of these forces.
