It is understood that you may or may not have access to the M16/M4 Series Rifle. If at all possible procure enough to have a weapon for every two Soldiers. The realism and hands on training will greatly benefit the Soldiers and the PowerPoint will not be necessary. Having the weapons would also allow you to get the Soldiers out of the classroom and conduct the training outside. 3 SECTION II. 3 "If the fighting Army does nothing else, we must be able to hit our targets. Conversely, if we do all other things right, but fail to hit and kill targets, we shall lose." This is the lead sentence in the Army Vice Chief of Staff's 11 Dec 1980 Marksmanship memorandum. Over the years, the marksmanship ability of an individual has been a predictor of his overall worth as a SOLDIER in combat. Additionally, the collective marksmanship ability of its Soldiers has been an accurate predictor of the overall worth of an army. Soldiers, regardless of their job, must ultimately rely on the rifle for individual protection, perhaps to save their own lives. All Soldiers will function more effectively when they are confident that their skill with the service rifle will ensure their personal protection. The combat power that can be generated by American Armed Forces is staggering. Unfortunately, the full force of this combat power could not be applied in Vietnam nor can it be applied in other limited conflicts that may arise.

4 To ensure security of the nation, we must be prepared for all-out war; however, the actual involvement of combat forces may be more closely related to a "rifle versus rifle" environment than a high intensity all out war. It is difficult to visualize any military conflict that will not require all Soldiers to be proficient with the service rifle, given the high mobility of all forces, the fluid environment expected on the battlefield, and the inability to provide complete security in rear areas. Therefore, the requirement for American Soldiers to be proficient with the service rifle takes on added importance. 5 Risk Assessment Level Low - Risk Assessment to be produced locally IAW FM 5-19, July 2006. Evaluation None 4 Instructional Lead-In Today you will receive training on the M16/M4 Series Rifle. The M16/M4 rifle will become as familiar to you like no other piece of equipment that you have known. 5 SECTION III. PRESENTATION 1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Disassemble the M16/M4 Series Rifle Method of Instruction: Conference / Discussion Instructor to Student Ratio: 1:35 Time of Instruction: 50 mins Media: Slide Presentation NOTE: SHOW Slide 3 (Clear Weapon) a. Clear the M16/M4 series rifle. (1) Point the muzzle in a designated safe direction or in a clearing barrel. (2) Attempt to place the selector lever on SAFE. If the selector lever cannot be placed on SAFE because the weapon is not cocked, proceed to Step 3. (3) Remove the magazine. To perform this procedure: (a) Depress the magazine catch button.

6 (b) Pull the magazine down. (4) Lock the bolt open. To perform this procedure: (a) Pull the charging handle rearward. (b) Press the bottom of the bolt catch. (c) Allow the bolt to move forward until it engages the bolt catch. (d) Return the charging handle to the forward position. (e) Ensure the selector switch is on SAFE. (5) Visually inspect the receiver and chamber to ensure that these areas contain no ammunition. (6) Allow the bolt to move forward by pressing the upper portion of the bolt catch. (7) Place the selector lever on SEMI. (8) Squeeze the trigger. (9) Pull the charging handle fully rearward and release it, allowing the bolt to return to the full forward position. (10) Place the selector lever on SAFE. (11) Close the ejection port cover. b. Disassemble the M16/M4 series rifle. NOTE: Do not use a screwdriver or any other tool when removing the handguards.

7 Doing so may damage the handguards, slip ring, or both. 6 NOTE: Use care not to bend or dent the gas tube while removing handguards. NOTE: SHOW Slide 4 (Remove Sling) (1) Remove the sling. NOTE: SHOW Slide 5 (Remove Handguards) (2) Remove the handguards only if you can see dirt or corrosion through the vent holes. Handguards are interchangeable because they are identical. NOTE: Use only hand pressure to disengage the pivot and takedown pins. Force other than hand pressure may cause damage to the weapon so that replacement of the weapon is required. Push the pivot and takedown pins only far enough to disengage the upper receiver from the lower receiver. NOTE: Stress to your students that the following slides picture a dummy round being used to perform the procedures. Take this opportunity to remind your students that live ammunition should never be used. NOTE: SHOW Slide 6 (Push the Takedown Pin) (3) Push the takedown pin as far as it will go and pivot the upper receiver from the lower receiver.

8 NOTE: SHOW Slide 7 (Push the Receiver Pivot Pin) (4) Push the receiver pivot pin. NOTE: SHOW Slide 8 (Separate Upper and Lower Receivers) (5) Separate the upper and lower receivers. NOTE: SHOW Slide 9 (Pull Charging Handle) (6) Pull back the charging handle. NOTE: SHOW Slide 10 (Remove Bolt Carrier Group) (7) Remove the bolt carrier and bolt. NOTE: SHOW Slide 11 (Remove Charging Handle) (8) Remove the charging handle. NOTE: Do not fully remove the round nuts from the threaded studs. The threaded studs are flared on the end to prohibit removal. However, if the nuts are inadvertently removed, they may be reinstalled. (9) Remove carrying handle assembly. Loosen the round nuts on the left side of the carrying handle approximately four turns. Loosen the clamping bar from the left side of the upper receiver and lift off the carrying handle. (M4 only) NOTE: SHOW Slide 12 (Remove Firing Pin Retaining Pin) (10) Remove the firing pin retaining pin.

9 7 (11) Put the bolt assembly in the locked position by pushing in the bolt. NOTE: SHOW Slide 13 (Remove Firing Pin) (12) Remove the firing pin by allowing it to drop out of the rear of the bolt carrier into your hand. NOTE: SHOW Slide 14 (Remove Bolt Cam Pin) (13) Remove the bolt cam pin by turning it one-quarter turn and lifting it out. NOTE: SHOW Slide 15 (Remove Bolt Assembly) (14) Pull the bolt assembly from the carrier. NOTE: Perform steps 15 through 17 only when the parts are dirty or damaged. NOTE: SHOW Slide 16 (Remove Extractor and Spring) (15) Press the rear of the extractor pin to check spring function. Report any weak springs to unit armorer for replacement. (16) Remove the extractor pin by pushing it out with the firing pin (use care not to damage the firing pin). (17) Lift out the extractor and spring, taking care that the spring does not separate from the extractor. NOTE: SHOW Slide 17 (Remove Buffer and Action Spring) (18) Release the buffer by pressing the buffer and depressing the retainer.

10 (19) Remove the buffer and action spring separating the buffer from the spring. (20) Extend the buttstock assembly to full open. The M4/M4A1 has a four position buttstock; closed, 1/2 open, 3/4 open, and full open. (21) Grasp the lock lever in the area of the retaining nut, pull downward, and slide the buttstock to the rear to separate the buttstock assembly from the lower receiver extension. 2. Assemble the M16/M4 series rifle. NOTE: SHOW Slide 18 (Install Buttstock Assembly) (1) Install buttstock assembly. Align the buttstock assembly with lower receiver extension; pull downward on the lock release lever near the retaining pin, and slide the buttstock assembly onto the lower receiver extension.
