ProgrammableAC/DC ELECTRONIC loadChroma s 63800 Series AC/DCElectronic Loads are designed for test-ing uninterruptible power supplies, ACsources and other power devices suchas switches, circuit breakers, fuses andconnectors. The power rating, parallel-ing and synchronization capabilitiesmake the 63800 an ideal tool for highpower AC test 63800 Loads can simulate highcrest factor and varying power factorload conditions with real time correctionbase on voltage distortion. These spe-cial features provide real world simula-tion capability and prevent over-stress-ing that allow AC products to be testedautomatically and with unique timing measure-ment functions, the 63800 Loads allowusers to measure the battery dischargetime, the protective time for fuse andbreaker and UPS life cycle.

The 63800 Loads include voltage andcurrent readback capability allowingusers to observe the AC load currentand output voltage of either discretelywith via oscilloscope using analog out-puts. In addition, the load provides TTLsignals to control external relays forshort circuit (crowbar) 63800 Series AC/DC Loads alsoprovide necessary measurement func-tions along with GPIB & RS-232 inter-faces for the most demanding engineer-ing tests and ATE features of the 63800 Loadsinclude built in fan speed control tominimize audio noise, internal self-diag-nosis firmware and full protectionagainst over-power, over-current 63800 SERIESKey Features :Power Rating:1500W, 45000 WVoltage Range: 50V - 350 VrmsCurrent Range: Up to 45 ArmsFrequency Range: 45 to 440Hz, DCReal time power factor correction prevents over-stressingCrest Factor Range: to Factor Range.

Modes included are constant cur-rent, constant resistance, constant voltage and constant power as depicted testing constant voltage devices like UPSs and AVRs, CC and CR modes are helpful in verifying these devicesremain stable and/or within regulated limits under different current & resistance load testing battery chargers or other current source products, the output current changes according to the battery volt-age ( the output current varies with the output voltage).

In these cases the loads CV mode is designed to forcechanges in output voltage allowing the load to be used to test battery chargers for correct charge current and batteryvoltage very the case where the device under test is a battery or fuel cell, the 63800 load can simulate the behavior of variousloads which these devices might be designed to drive. Many of this loads have power consumption patterns which areconstant power in nature. Consequently, the LoadCP mode is designed to simulate these load types and is essentialfor battery discharge loading. Factor & Power Factor with real time correctionThe specification range of CF is to and PF is 0to 1 lead or lag (limited by crest factor). The 63800 loadcontrols power factor by shifting the current relative to theinput voltage to generate a displacement power factor.

Ifthe PF programmed is positive it will be a leading PF,negative programmed values result in a lagging PF. The CF & PF control is only used while in CC or CPmodes with the operating range limit as figure 1. Forexample, for a programmed crest factor of , thepower factor allowed is only 1 assume that the input volt-age is 350 Vrms sine-wave. However, for a programmedCF of , the PF may range from to , for a pro-grammed CF of , the PF may range from to so on. Thus, if a higher desired power factor thelower the range of crest factors, and vice also that when high crest factors are programmedsome UUTs will respond with a distorted voltage wave-form (see figure 2) which changes the resultant powerfactor.

The 63800 AC load is capable to automatically (inreal-time) shift the current waveform to maintain thedesired power factor setting, thereby compensating forvoltage distortion of the UUT s 1:Crest Factor Factor control RangePFCFF igure 2CF=Ipk/IrmsPF =Active Power/Apparent Programming sequencesThe 63800 AC/DC load includes 100 user programmable sequences with a time range from 10ms to 24 hour and countfrom 0 to 65535. A user friendly front panel input with power factor & crest factor control and GO/NG inspection forsemi-automated test applications is also included. These features assist in many kinds of testing including UPS tran-sient load simulation, high inrush current generation, short testing, engine start-up loading simulation, battery automateddischarging, fuse and breaker life cycle testing and many others.

/ Slave parallel controlWhen higher power levels or three phase operations is required, the 63800 loads may be used parallel or combined for3-phase loading. The 63800 loads allow for Master / Slave control mode whereby users only need to program the mas-ter unit; and slave units are automatically scaled and controlled by the master. In short, this allows several load units towork as a single load simplifying operation dramatically. MeasurementsChroma s 63800 Series AC/DC ELECTRONIC Loads includes built-in 16-bits precision measurement circuits and firmwareutilities to measure the steady-state and transient responses for true RMS voltage, true RMS current, true power(P),apparent power(S), reactive power(Q), crest factor, power factor and peak repetitive current.

In additional to these discrete measurements, analog outputs for voltage and current are provided as a convenientmeans of monitoring these signals via an external oscilloscope. The 63800 AC/DC load also includes unique timing measurement function allowing for time ranges between to99999s. This feature allows users to set the final voltage & time out value to measure battery discharge time,A triggervoltoge can be set to measure the protective time of fuse & circuit breaker testing and UPS life cycle time record. 10 2. Battery Test with Discharge Time RecordSince power consumption patterns of most ELECTRONIC devices are typical constant power in nature, Chroma's 63800 ELECTRONIC load contant power mode is ideal for battery testing allowing for precise control & measurement of dischargeloading with time UPS & AVR TestingUninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) and Auto Voltage Regulators (AVRs) are known as safe-guard systems. The63800 is designed to provide precisely controlled non-linear loads with programmable crest factor and power factor toreplace resistive load banks for testing these devices. This technology allows real world test conditions to be reliablyand repetitive applied which are not possible with passive resistive loading.
